As architects, we are often tasked with coming up with creative solutions that solve multiple problems for our clients. A homeowner may want to add square footage to their home, while at the same time, changing the look of their home’s exterior. Or the owner of a commercial building will ask us to modernize their lobby, and also provide the space with more natural light. We can never predict what challenge a client will present us with, but we’re always up for it!
Coming up with the perfect solution for a homeowner or business owner sometimes comes down to selecting the right products and materials. We are often looking for things that do “double duty”—products that are both beautiful and durable; lightweight, but also sturdy; expensive-looking, but low maintenance.
A recent design project of ours, a large apartment complex in Newport Beach called Park Newport, was one of those that called for a creative solution.
The owners of Park Newport wanted us to provide them with an updated look for the complex’s exterior. One of the areas we identified as needing improvement was the apartments’ balconies. Each of the balconies were fitted with safety railings that allowed the residents’ personal belongings to be seen. It created a cluttered look in an otherwise neat and tidy apartment complex.
We researched alternatives to the railings that would provide the residents with safety and privacy, and gave the complex owners the streamlined look, durability, and affordability they desired. After looking at several options, the solution we landed on was mesh screens made by J. Miller Canvas, a Santa Ana-based company that manufactures commercial architectural fabric used for things like canopies, shade sales, and awnings. Their products can be seen in shopping centers, restaurants, commercial buildings, theme parks, and apartment buildings throughout California.
The mesh screens from J. Miller Canvas were the perfect solution. Once installed, they made the complex look much more contemporary. They were the most economical choice as well. Overall, the Park Newport project was a success and the canvas screens made by J. Miller Canvas were an important part of it.
When the project was completed, J. Miller Canvas published a case study on our architecture firm’s collaboration with their company on the Park Newport project. You can read the case study on the J. Miller Canvas website by clicking here.
