As an architect, I sometimes get asked this question: “Is now a good time to do a home remodel, or should I wait?” I get this question now that home prices are up in Long Beach, and I also got it when home prices were down. Some people seem to be reluctant to take on a home remodeling project—especially a major one—whatever the circumstances with the housing market or the economy. Likely because it can be a sizeable investment.
Trying to predict what the housing market or the economy will do is an exercise in futility, in my opinion. If you have your finances in order and you want to remodel your home, now is just as good a time as any.
With only a few exceptions, there isn’t really a bad time to undertake a home remodel. One of those exceptions might be if you are viewing a home remodel purely as an investment and plan to sell it as soon as the remodel is complete. This can be a bit risky, as the success of the remodel can depend a lot on the state of the housing market when it comes time to sell. Our Long Beach architecture firm doesn’t take on a lot of these types of projects. We prefer to work with homeowners who are remodeling homes for their own purposes. They may want to enlarge their living space or reallocate the space to make it more functional or enjoyable for their family. Or they may want to add on to accommodate an elderly family member. In other words, they want to improve their quality of living for themselves and/or their families. If that is the situation you find yourself in, now is a great time to call a Long Beach architect to start the process of redesigning your home.
After completing a home remodel, so many homeowners we’ve worked with have made the comment, “We wish we would have done this sooner!” They express regret about putting off their dreams for years, rather than completing a remodel earlier and spending those years enjoying a home that perfectly suited their needs and lifestyle.
There’s no perfect time to take on a home remodel. You’re going to have to put up with some inconveniences while your home is being worked on, but it will all be worth it in the end.
