Unless you live in a completely custom home that you had a hand in designing, your Long Beach home was not built with you and your family in mind. If you live in a custom home built by someone else, it was designed with the original owner’s lifestyle in mind, and if you live in a tract home, it was likely designed to accommodate the average Long Beach family—or who the architect perceived to be the average Long Beach family. Its designer didn’t take into account how you and your family live, work, cook, entertain, or spend your downtime in your home.
Maybe your home has a large formal dining room that you never use, or a “sitting room” that you dust more often than you sit in. For your family, it might not just be about what your home has that you don’t need, but also about what your home doesn’t have that you would enjoy regularly. That might mean a hangout space for your kids, a dedicated workout room, a temperature-controlled wine room, a home theater, or something else entirely.
Even if your home was perfectly adequate when you first bought it, your family’s situation may have changed since then. Your kids grew up and moved out; you added to your family by having kids or taking in an elderly family member; or you now work from home and need some office space. Needs change over the years, and your home could likely benefit from some changes as well.
Here at Grisafe Architecture, we work with a lot of families to help transform their Long Beach homes into spaces that work for them. It doesn’t always involve adding more square footage. It often just means reallocating the space in a way that makes sense for our clients and their lifestyles.
Take this Rossmoor home remodel project, for example. We didn’t increase the home’s square footage at all, but instead, strategically moved some walls to create spaces that the family would actually use and enjoy. We captured the square footage from a little-used second dining room and turned it into a large laundry room, as well as a walk-in pantry. The formal living room was transformed into a more casual hangout space that could accommodate a pool table. We added new patio doors to make the patio and backyard more accessible for entertaining. The kitchen was revamped to create more storage and counter space. It is now a home suitable for an active family—with an open floor plan and all the amenities they were hoping for!
