At our Long Beach architecture firm, we love the variety of the projects we get to work on. We do our share of residential remodels and new home design, but we also get to work on some exciting tenant improvement projects for our commercial clients.
Recently, we were approached by two doctors who wanted to open a new surgical and rehabilitation center in Long Beach. Both doctors have a passion for helping people reclaim their lives from debilitating pain through a customized, holistic approach. They incorporate everything from physical therapy to psychiatry, and if needed, surgery and medication. This is a unique approach, given that it takes into account the different ways people respond to pain, and it doesn’t rely heavily on the use of drugs to manage pain.
The doctors were interested in remodeling an abandoned building in Long Beach built in the 1960s for their surgical and rehabilitation center. The building had previously been used as a surgery center, but as we got into code research and the demolition process, it became clear that a significant amount of the building’s components would need to be replaced. A previous remodel turned out to have been poorly executed, and the building needed more work than originally anticipated. What started as a tenant improvement project, turned into a complete overhaul. However, the end result is a state-of-the-art facility that is a wonderful addition to the Long Beach community.
The completed facility now has two operating rooms as well as a physical therapy room. It has a sleek, modern design that incorporates some industrial elements. Overall, it has a spa-like feel, utilizing clean lines, a soothing color palette, and natural materials. The look and feel of the facility complements the doctors’ approach to health and wellness and is a great atmosphere to help put patients at ease.
Our Long Beach architecture firm was assisted in the interior design aspect of the project by Denise Foley Design, who selected the soothing colors and natural materials that helped bring the spa-like feel to the facility. Outside, the landscape design was done by Graham Stanley, a local landscape architect who brought the simplicity of the interior to the exterior, while also reducing water usage by incorporating drought-tolerant plants.
